The entire Freedom and Safety series can be read as a gradual movement from simple intuitions to a complex, multi-layered picture of reality, in which these categories exist not as abstract ideals but as practical, conflicting and historically fluid forces.
In the first volumes, we saw freedom as the idea of autonomy – the ability of the subject to act of his own free will, regardless of external coercion. Safety, in turn, was analyzed as a basic condition for survival and stability – protection from threats, both natural and social. Already at this stage, it became clear that both categories are rooted in human vulnerability: freedom arises as a desire to overcome restrictions, safety – as a desire to minimize risks.
Further, the analysis shifted towards social institutions. We saw how freedom and safety are enshrined in law, politics, economics. The state, for example, turned out to be both a guarantor of safety and a potential source of restriction of freedom. The market is a space of choice and at the same time a system that creates new forms of dependence. Technology – empowerment tools and surveillance mechanisms.
In subsequent volumes, attention has focused on complicating these relationships. Globalization, digitalization, the growing complexity of social systems have led to the fact that traditional models of understanding freedom and safety have ceased to work fully. There are new forms of threats (cyber threats, information manipulations), as well as new forms of control (algorithmic control, mass data collection).
To date, the key conclusion can be drawn:
freedom and safety do not exist separately from each other. They form a single dynamic system in which the change of one element inevitably affects the other. Moreover, the very meanings of these concepts change depending on the context – historical, cultural, technological.
Thus, the result of the entire series is a rejection of simplified oppositions and a transition to understanding complexity:
freedom and safety are not fixed states, but processes that are in constant formation.
